That's the cockpit. An id well is a simulated environment we're put inside using that. Brilliant Detectives Sakaido and Anaido only exist there, and they're not meant to have any awareness of their true identities.

What happens if they do gain awareness of their true identities?

They fall into dogma and a well storm is created, making them impossible to extract.

Generally, the only way for them to become aware of themselves is if they're inside their own id well. And that's a bit recursive, being inside a simulation that is influenced by your own mind. That's why it's a problem.
